Building a Bridge

"But the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left.  That day the Lord saved Israel from the hands of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the shore." - Exodus 14:29-30

The steps you take today carry the seed for tomorrow. As it reads above, when the children of Israel found the courage to leave Egypt on God's leading and cross the Red Sea, the hope of the  next generations was secured. Never again would they have to cross the Red Sea in the same manner. We all have a red sea in front of us. We have to decide how or if we will cross it. One thing is for sure, we cannot cross it alone.

My sophomore year of college, I called my mother in tears.I was ready to quit. Going to college away from home had finally brought me to a broken place. I was so lonely and felt the pressure of being on my own.  It felt too hard. As I cried miserably on the phone with my mother she echoed a God given word in my ears. She told me, "Christine, you can do it. You are building a bridge so when you have children, they can just walk over it. Right now, you are going through it for them, so they won't have to. In reality, you are really a pioneer."Growing up my parents did not encourage us to be exactly as they are. They pushed for us to be better.   In life, we can be so consumed with our current situation that we feel that it just about us but it never is. It is always about the generations after us. We all leave behind a legacy. It can either tear our children down or build them up. We are the holders of their destiny. Our decisions today influence the choices we make tomorrow.

Now,  I write as a happily married women who is about to graduate with her Master's Degree. I  see my mothers encouragement and advice from a whole new level. My husband and I speak constantly, about how important it is for us to challenge ourselves, and conquer the issues we face so our children can conquer them too. Though we do not have any children yet, in every decision that we make as a family, they are close in our thoughts and minds. Just as Christ Jesus thought of us as he got back on the cross. He could have walked away, but it was his heart and compassion for the children of God that compelled him to conquer to grave.

When the time comes for my husband and I to welcome children into this world, we will raise them with the same precept that is sourced through the teachings of Jesus Christ. We do not want them to replicate our actions, we want them to strive to be better than we are. In John 14:12-13 it reads, "Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it."
