The Eyes of your Heart

"I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe." - Ephesians 1:18-19

It is so important to take care of your heart. It is fair to argue that the very essence of who we are stems from the condition of our hearts. In his book, The Heart Revolution, Pastor Sergio De La Mora points out that the course of our lives is determined by the condition of our hearts. Our heart deserves our attention. In the same way that we must be sure to exercise and eat right to see a healthy condition for our bodies, we must also do the same for our hearts.   One way to filter what we allow in our hearts is to be careful of what we allow the eyes of our heart to see.

Our eyes not only give us vision but allow our brain to process action to judge what is good or bad. When we see something long enough, even if it is bad, we begin to place it in the compartment of the familiar. How often does this happen to our hearts? This is why we fail to get out of a bad relationship even when we know it is toxic. Our heart begins to recognize it as familiar. Proverbs 23:7 reads, "As a man thinks in his heart, so is he..." If we put negative things before our heart to view on a consistent basis, our hearts will come to determine negativity as normal. Truly, our best option is to turn the eyes of our hearts to the hope of Jesus Christ. We must fix our eyes from that person or situation to the power and strength of God.

How often do we struggle with letting go of a relationship, bad habit, or hurt? If you are struggling to let go, then the eyes of your heart are fixated on the wrong thing. In Proverbs 4:23 it reads, "Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the the course of your life." Let's break the cycle. Even if you find yourself in the midst of a toxic cycle you begin the transformation of your life by changing what you allow your heart to see daily. Take it one step, one day at a time.  Read one chapter of proverbs a day or even start with a scripture. Begin to talk to God in prayer. Ask God to forgive your sins and help you to forgive. In doing this, you will see His peace take over your life. All the answers to every problem you will ever have is in Him. Your change requires hope, faith, discipline, and patience. Just ask God to open the eyes of your heart to see Him and Him alone.
